Sometimes when you dip into your jar you may notice that your body butter, deodorant, or lip balm feels a little grainy. At first it can be surprising, but rest assured this is completely normal with natural skincare.
Graininess is simply part of the character of pure oils and butters. It does not mean your product has gone bad.
Why It Happens
The grainy texture usually appears when natural butters such as shea, mango butter, or cocoa melt and then cool down slowly. As they solidify, tiny crystals can form which give that slightly gritty feel.
What I Do to Prevent It
When I make deodorants, body butters, and lip balms that are purely oil based, I take extra care to reduce the chance of graininess. The process is long and gentle. The oils are melted and then held at a very low heat for a long time. After that they are frozen so they can set very quickly. These steps do help to prevent the crystals from forming.
But natural products are natural products. No matter how thorough I am, graininess can still appear. If it does, it is completely okay. The products do not lose their potency. They are just as good, only the smoothness of application is affected.
Can I Smooth It Out
If you prefer a creamier texture you can reset the lip balms and deodorants yourself. Place the jar in a bowl of warm water or give it a few seconds in the microwave until the mixture melts. Stir gently and then cool it quickly in the fridge or freezer to stop crystals from forming. This will help restore a smoother consistency.
If you do not mind the graininess you can simply use it as it is. The grains will soften as soon as they touch your skin.
