Inside the Jar: Facial Scrub
When you read the back of a skincare jar, the ingredient list doesn’t always tell you very much.
Aqua. Betaine. Panthenol. Pumice. Cetearyl Olivate...
So today, I thought I’d take you inside our Facial Scrub and explain what I actually put into it and why.
It starts with a cream 🌿
Our Facial Scrub isn’t simply exfoliating particles suspended in oil.
I make a soft cream base using water, coconut-derived caprylic triglyceride and olive-derived emulsifiers.
This gives the scrub its creamy texture and allows it to glide over the skin while you exfoliate.
Cetyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol, helps give the cream body and that smooth, velvety feel. Despite the name, it isn't the drying type of alcohol people often associate with skincare.
Then comes the exfoliation
Ultra-fine pumice stone is what does the physical exfoliating.
Pumice is a naturally occurring volcanic material. When ground very finely for cosmetic use, it provides the tiny particles that gently polish the surface of the skin.
This is also why I always say: you don't need to scrub hard.
Let the product do the work and massage it gently over the skin.
Ingredients that care for your skin
I didn't want the formula to be only about exfoliation.
Vegetable glycerin + betaine
Humectants that help attract and hold water, supporting hydration.
Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)
A moisturising and conditioning ingredient that helps leave the skin feeling soft and cared for.
Hydrolysed oat protein
Helps condition the skin and contributes to the soft feel of the formula.
Raspberry seed extract
A botanical extract from raspberry seeds that brings naturally occurring plant compounds to the formula.
And a little citrus 🍊
The final touch is mandarin and sweet orange peel essential oils.
I use them for their fresh, natural citrus aroma rather than adding synthetic fragrance.
So when you open the jar, that soft citrus scent comes from the essential oils themselves.
