There is something incredibly satisfying about how your skin feels after a good exfoliation. Softer, smoother and fresh, without needing a complicated skincare routine.
But when it comes to facial scrubs, more exfoliation is definitely not better.
The skin on our face needs a much gentler approach than the skin on our body. A facial scrub should polish the skin rather than aggressively scrub it. That was very important to me when creating the Earth Lab Facial Scrub.
I wanted the texture to be incredibly fine, creamy and gentle, with enough exfoliation to leave your skin beautifully smooth, but without that harsh, scratchy feeling you can get from some conventional scrubs.
Why do we need to exfoliate?
Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells as part of its renewal process. But sometimes those cells remain sitting on the surface of the skin.
This can leave your complexion looking dull or uneven and your skin feeling rough or dry.
Gentle exfoliation helps remove some of this surface buildup. After exfoliating, skin can immediately feel smoother and softer, and your skincare products can be applied to freshly cleansed, exfoliated skin.
It is also one of those skincare steps where you can actually feel the difference straight away.
The important word, though, is gentle.
You do not need to scrub your skin hard to exfoliate it effectively.
What makes the Earth Lab Facial Scrub different?
The heart of the Earth Lab Facial Scrub is ultrafine pumice stone.
Pumice is a naturally occurring volcanic material. For this formula, I use it in an extremely fine form so that instead of feeling like large, rough particles against the skin, the scrub feels like a very fine polish.
The texture is creamy with tiny superfine granules running through it.
When you massage it gently over damp skin, those particles help lift away surface dead skin cells and leave the skin feeling beautifully smooth and polished. Because the pumice is so fine, you do not need to apply much pressure at all.
That is actually one of my favourite things about this scrub.
It feels effective without feeling aggressive.
A facial scrub should do more than exfoliate
One of the problems I have with very traditional facial scrubs is that the entire formula can be focused on one thing: scrubbing.
I wanted Earth Lab's formula to be different.
While the ultrafine pumice provides the physical exfoliation, the creamy base contains ingredients chosen to help maintain moisture and leave the skin feeling comfortable afterwards. The formula includes vegetable glycerin, betaine, Vitamin B5, raspberry seed extract and hydrolysed oat protein.
Natural Betaine
Betaine is a lovely humectant ingredient that helps attract and retain moisture.
This is particularly useful in an exfoliating product. While the pumice is polishing the surface of the skin, betaine helps support hydration so that your skin does not simply feel scrubbed and stripped afterwards.
Vitamin B5
Panthenol, also known as Vitamin B5, is another ingredient I included to complement the exfoliating part of the formula.
It helps support hydration and contributes to that soft, conditioned feeling you notice after rinsing the scrub away.
Hydrolysed Oat Protein
I love oats in skincare, particularly when creating products where gentleness is important.
Hydrolysed oat protein helps condition and moisturise the skin, balancing the physical exfoliation from the pumice.
Raspberry Seed Extract
The formula also contains raspberry seed extract, a botanical ingredient naturally rich in antioxidant compounds.
Rather than creating a basic scrub that simply removes surface skin cells, I wanted to surround the exfoliating ingredient with a thoughtful blend of ingredients that also care for the skin.
How often should you exfoliate your face?
For most people, once or twice a week is a good place to start.
Some skin may tolerate exfoliation more frequently, while dry, sensitive or reactive skin may need it less often.
Pay attention to how your skin responds.
If your skin feels comfortable, soft and smooth afterwards, that is what you want.
If it becomes red, irritated, tight or tender, exfoliate less frequently and make sure you are not applying too much pressure.
There is no benefit in trying to scrub harder.
How to use the Earth Lab Facial Scrub
Start with clean, damp skin.
Take approximately a pea sized amount of Facial Scrub and gently spread it across your face.
Using your fingertips, massage it over the skin in small, gentle circular movements. Concentrate on areas where you notice more texture or buildup, such as around the nose, chin and forehead.
Avoid the delicate eye area.
Massage for around 30 seconds to one minute. There is absolutely no need to press hard. Let the ultrafine pumice do the work.
Rinse thoroughly with warm, not excessively hot, water.
Then gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing it.
What should you do after exfoliating?
After exfoliation, I like to keep the rest of the routine simple.
Follow with your usual moisturiser while your skin is clean and fresh. At Earth Lab, you can follow the Facial Scrub with Face Butter or Facial Day Cream depending on the texture and level of richness your skin prefers.
A few facial exfoliation best practices
A few simple habits can make a big difference:
Use less pressure than you think you need.
The scrub should glide over your skin. You do not need to press the particles into it.
Start slowly.
If you are new to facial exfoliation, begin once a week and see how your skin responds.
Do not exfoliate irritated or broken skin.
If your skin is already feeling compromised, give it time to settle.
Always moisturise afterwards.
Exfoliation and hydration work beautifully together.
Keep the jar clean.
Use clean fingers or a clean, dry spatula when taking product from the jar, and avoid introducing water into it.
Exfoliation does not need to be aggressive
I think this is probably the most important thing to remember.
We sometimes associate that very scrubbed, almost squeaky clean feeling with a product "working".
But good skincare does not need to fight with your skin.
A facial scrub can be incredibly fine and gentle and still leave your skin noticeably smoother.
That is exactly what I wanted from the Earth Lab Facial Scrub: a superfine creamy polish that gently removes surface buildup while surrounding the skin with hydrating and conditioning ingredients.
A minute or two, once or twice a week.
Nothing complicated.
Just one of those small skincare rituals that leaves your face feeling wonderfully fresh, soft and smooth.
Warmly,
Anya
