Some ingredients quietly become the heart of a skincare range.
For me, organic shea butter is one of them.
It's one of the ingredients I reach for most often when creating Earth Lab products because it's beautifully simple, incredibly nourishing and has been trusted for generations to care for dry skin.
What is shea butter?
Organic shea butter comes from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), which grows naturally across West Africa.
For centuries, local communities have handcrafted shea butter and valued it for its ability to nourish, soften and protect the skin. Today, it remains one of the most loved natural skincare ingredients in the world, and for good reason.
Rich in naturally occurring fatty acids and vitamins, shea butter helps replenish moisture and supports the skin's natural barrier, making it especially beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin.
It's one of nature's most remarkable skincare ingredients, and I couldn't imagine creating Earth Lab products without it.
Why I love formulating with shea butter
Whenever I develop a new product, I think first about how it will feel on your skin.
Shea butter creates a rich, luxurious texture that melts beautifully with the warmth of your hands. As it softens, it glides effortlessly across the skin before gradually absorbing, leaving it feeling deeply moisturised, comfortable and protected.
I especially appreciate it during winter.
Cold mornings, wind, indoor heating and long hot showers can all strip moisture from the skin. Shea butter helps restore that lost comfort, leaving skin feeling soft, supple and cared for.
What makes shea butter so special?
Unlike many modern skincare ingredients designed for one specific purpose, shea butter offers several benefits naturally.
It contains oleic, stearic and linoleic fatty acids that help support healthy-looking skin and maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier.
Although firm at room temperature, it melts quickly when warmed between your fingertips, making it ideal for rich creams, body butters, balms and natural deodorants.
Because it's naturally gentle, it's suitable for many skin types, including dry and sensitive skin.
Sometimes the simplest ingredients are the most effective.
